TREAC Paragraph:
The addition of art to science discovery can allow for new perspectives to be seen. Since science, such as physics or neuroscience, is so dense and complex, using art can propose new mechanisms and new ideas. As an illustration, in “The Future of Science…Is Art?,” Author Jonah Lehrer demands that science has limitations that the scientific method doesn’t solve, but art can help scientists see different patterns and “blind spots.” Lehrer’s views support the idea that science isn’t always right and it does indeed have limitations that are far too complex for one person to solve. There are theories, such as the string theory, big bang theory, etc… that scientists have been trying to solve for decades, but they have frowned upon using forms of art to aid their research. The importance of art is emphasized so much in this essay because after all, scientists are imagining these theories. It is truly impossible for the human brain to fathom the science behind the string theory, but art, as Lehrer describes, enlightens the human mind. While it may seem foolish and imaginary to apply art with science, it can override the science limitations and serve as a guide to help scientists see different perspectives.
Barclay Paragraph:
Both Jonah Lehrer and Yo-Yo Ma argue that art is a necessary resource to aid the limitations of science discovery. In “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education,” Ma values in what he believes are the two ways of thinking; empathetic thinking (art), and critical thinking (science). The empathetical thinking he implies in this essay is the arts, considered it is centered around values and emotion, while critical thinking is centered around science because it involves using logic to drive your beliefs. He implies that empathetic thinking is necessary to drive critical thinking and vise-versa, but they need to be balanced.”Equilibrium occurs when the information from the edges is available to the core.” Ma believes that the balance of art and science is necessary and it needs to be equally distributed. On the other hand, Jonah Lehrer, in his essay, “The Future of Science…Is Art?,” believes that art IS the second outlook to cancel out the limitations of neuroscience and physics. For Lehrer, he looks at art as a second hope and a new opportunity to comprehend the bigger picture of the universe. Art is an important device to aid scientific discovery, but it isn’t the last resort. I relate to Yo-Yo Ma’s views because the healthy balance between art and science is the key to driving scientific discoveries. While science has certain limitations, art plays a huge role in not letting it go too far. Science isn’t the end all be all method to research, but art isn’t either, so it is necessary that the balance remains.
