Chapter Three: The Art of Quoting

I chose to read chapter 3 of “They Say/I Say”, which is The Art of Quoting. In some essays, I have a lot of trouble trying to incorporate a quote into my essay, and then put it into conversation with the rest of my essay. In high school, the teachers taught us as long as we put quotes in our essays, we would be okay. As soon as I got to college, I realized that adding quotes to essays was far more complex because not only do you have to elaborate on them, you have to put them into the conversation. This chapter provides so many helpful templates on how to introduce quotes in your argument and templates on how to explain the quotes. It also lists troubleshooting paragraphs, such as “CAN YOU OVERANALYZE A QUOTATION?” and “HOW NOT TO INTRODUCE QUOTATIONS”. This chapter covers the many different aspects of the addition of quotes in your essay. Not only does it tell me how to weave quotes in, but also what types of quotes to use and their relevancy. This chapter will help me so much in adding quotes to my essay.

During my revision, I will add more quotes to my essay. That is why I decided to read this chapter because I had only a couple of quotes. My peers provided me with the most honest feedback, and I am very happy they did because I know what to work on and how to fix it. “They Say/I Say” is an amazing resource because whatever you need help with in writing, this book provides you with the correct information you need.
